"Three Faiths, One God" Shows at Palace Theatre; Addresses Commonalities of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim Faiths

Syracuse, New York – On Thursday, October 18, 2007 beginning at 7:00 p.m., InterFaith Works of Central New York in partnership with Women Transcending Boundaries, will host a presentation of the film “Three Faiths, One God” at the Palace Theatre (2384 James Street, Syracuse). The film will be followed by a brief Q&A session, where questions of clarification can be responded regarding the three faith traditions. The event is free and open to the public. A free will contribution is appreciated.

“Three Faiths, One God” thoughtfully examines the religious beliefs and practices shared by Jews, Christians and Muslims to illustrate how many individuals in Abrahamic faith communities are dealing with historical conflicts, yet remain dedicated to facilitating understanding and respect. The film captures a broad range of voices and ideas of ordinary people and respected scholars in the interfaith field.

The program compares the religious practices of the three faiths, including the ritual of fasting as observed in Ramadan and Yom Kippur, the similarities between Muslim and Jewish weddings, as well as examining what the Lord’s Prayer and the opening of the Q’uran have in common.

InterFaith Works was originally formed more than 30 years ago to encourage open dialogue, understanding, support and interaction among faith communities. Today InterFaith Works offers six programs: Center for New Americans, Community Wide Dialogue to End Racism, Covenant Housing, Long Term Care Ombudsman, Senior Companions and Spiritual Care.

The program includes commentary from notable scholars including Karen Armstrong, author of “The Battle for God” and “The Holy War,” Professor Abdulaziz Sachedina, author of “The Islamic Roots of Democratic Pluralism;” Rabbi Reuven Firestone, author of “Children of Abraham: Introduction to Judaism for Muslims,” and other speakers and scholars.

Women Transcending Boundaries is an egalitarian community of women from many religious and cultural traditions. Through seminars, speakers, symposia, lectures, literature and social interactions, we seek to nurture mutual respect and understanding by sharing information about our diverse beliefs, customs and practices and by working together to address our common concerns in this post-9/11 world. Our further intention is to share our personal and collective experiences with the wider community, to educate and serve.

InterFaith Works, through education, service and dialogue, affirms the dignity of each person and every faith community and works to create relationships and understanding among us. The agency has served the Central New York community for over 30 years with programs including the Community Wide Dialogue to End Racism, Covenant Housing, Long Term Care Ombudsman, Refugee Resettlement, Senior Companion and Spiritual Care.
