Exponential Growth: A Video Message from CEO Beth A. Broadway (click here)

Our mission to affirm the dignity of each person and every faith tradition, build racial and religious equity, and create bridges of understanding among us is happening in our lifetime! Each day, we lay the foundations of InterFaith Works’ mission to affirm the dignity of all. At this time of thanksgiving, with grateful hearts, we would like to share stories of our transformational work.

Eliminating Hunger

Pastor Alberta Abrams directs the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ’s food pantry and community garden in Syracuse. “Without the support of InterFaith Works, our pantry would not have the depth of supplies to meet our neighbors’ needs,” she says. InterFaith Works’ Food Justice Initiative supports 32 pantries located in Syracuse’s food deserts. The pantries provide culturally appropriate food and personal hygiene products. A community garden built by InterFaith Works’ volunteers provides fresh produce, including squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and collard greens. This year, the pantries have provided enough food for 31,616 meals. Pastor Alberta describes her faith community’s food pantry garden as a “ministry of sharing, caring, and listening.”

Digital Inclusion is designed to improve elders’ digital skills as well as provide devices and access to low-cost broadband. Ocyntha Sevilla became connected with InterFaith Works when her husband, who suffers from dementia, was paired with an InterFaith Work’s Senior Companion. She and 198 others have graduated from the Digital Inclusion Program. “The digital literacy training I received through InterFaith Works has allowed me to acquire information about support services offered to people with dementia,” she says. “Receiving new skills and a device to access the internet has made all the difference in my family’s quality of life.”

Building Futures

Pathways for High-Skilled Immigrants supports skilled immigrant workers who arrive with job-ready capability. Job coaching and training helps clients increase English language and cultural competency skills, secure jobs with advancement opportunities, and meet with mentors. Hiba Alqaraghuli and her husband arrived in Syracuse from Baghdad, Iraq, in 2012. Hiba arrived with a bachelor’s degree and extensive teaching experience. Through InterFaith Works, Hiba got her college transcripts translated, enrolled at OCC to augment her degree, and got accredited in the U.S. Hiba now teaches at the Syracuse Northeast Community Center and is going for her master’s degree. Hiba shared, “InterFaith Works is a great organization because they stay connected with you until you have received the services you need.”

A new Maternal Health Program was launched this year to provide comprehensive maternal and infant health services to refugee and immigrant women. The program focuses on the unique needs of New American families and helps them maintain healthy pregnancies, deliver healthy babies, and have positive pre- and post-natal experiences. Oh Ka Dor Paw and her husband Eh Mwee are refugees from Thailand. Through InterFaith Works, she participated in childbirth classes and received a crib, changing table, clothes, and diapers. She also received post-partum support. “Because of InterFaith Works, our lives have gotten better,” says Oh Ka Dor. “I would recommend the program to others because it was so helpful to me. I brag to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law who live in another state. They have no such program to help in such a wonderful way.”

These life-changing programs would not be possible without the support provided by you, and our other generous donors. As you consider your year-end giving, we respectfully ask you to make a gift that will support these and other InterFaith Works programs. Your gift will affirm the hope our agency provides.

In gratitude for all we accomplish together,

The Center for New Americans Resettlement Wish Lists are a new way to contribute household items to help a family resettle. It’s as simple as following the link and placing an order through the Amazon, Target and Walmart websites. Your order ships directly to the InterFaith Works Warehouse in East Syracuse. From there, Warehouse staff and volunteers organize and distribute items, so newly arriving families have everything they need.

The needs of the Warehouse stockpiles will change, as will the needs of arriving families, depending on the month and/or season. So check out the Resettlement Wish Lists today, next week, next month or periodically for the changing in list needs, and thank you for being part of creating new homes in Central New York!

If you would like to donate goods and/or household items from your home or residence, the Warehouse (14 Corporate Circle, East Syracuse) is open for drop off on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:00AM to noon. For large donation items, the InterFaith Works truck can be scheduled for pick up in the greater Syracuse area on Mondays only. For more information about the Warehouse/truck drop off or pick up services and schedules, contact Rhonda Butler at 315-449-3552, ext. 127, or email rbutler@ifwcny.org.

What’s Your Legacy?

“A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.” –D. Elton Trueblood

Every day, InterFaith Works affirms the dignity of each person and every faith community and builds bridges of understanding. By partnering with those who share these values, we—and you—can secure the future of the agency for years and for generations.

Why Has InterFaith Works Established an Endowment Fund? The agency has created an Endowment Fund to help ensure it has the financial resources to meet its needs years and even decades from now.

What Is an Endowment Fund?InterFaith Works’ Endowment Fund is a permanent fund that provides for the future needs of the agency and those it serves. Gifts to the fund are invested for growth and a portion of the fund may be used to sustain the agency’s programs or to fund new programs or projects as the need arises. While a donor may contribute a gift to the agency for immediate use (such as a donation to the year-end appeal), a gift designated to the Endowment Fund is an investment in the agency’s future. The Central New York Community Foundation was selected to hold the fund, invest the fund’s assets for growth, and provide its experienced staff who are available to assist those making gifts to InterFaith Works’ Endowment Fund, if requested. The Central New York Community Foundation, established in 1927, serves as a permanent community endowment for the betterment of Central New York and is the largest charitable foundation in the region.

How Do I Make a Gift to the Endowment Fund?Gifts to the Endowment Fund may be made during your lifetime or planned as part of your estate. There are several ways to make a gift to InterFaith Works’ Endowment Fund. These include:

Donating Now: You may provide for the future needs of InterFaith Works by making an outright gift now. Examples include cash gifts made by check, credit card, appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, and paid up life insurance.

Pledged Gift: You may make a pledge now to the Endowment Fund and fulfill it over a specified period of time.

Planned Gift: You may make a gift to the Endowment Fund as part of your estate plan. Planned gifts are often attractive because they do not impact your current standard of living, and may permit you to make a larger gift than what was possible during your life. Examples of planned gifts include a bequest in your will (e.g., a specific amount or a percentage of your estate), as well as designating the agency as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy or a retirement plan (including IRAs, 403(b) and 401(k) accounts).

What if I Have Already Designated InterFaith Works in My Estate Plan?If you have already included the agency in your will, trust, life insurance, or other type of estate plan, please let us know. We’d like to thank you.

Who Should I Contact to Make a Gift or for More Information? If you would like to receive more detailed information about the Endowment Fund or how you could participate, please contact:

As with any financial decision, please consult your legal or financial advisor to discuss what type of gift is best for you.

Enjoy the ease and convenience of being a recurring donor while providing ongoing support and stability for our work and programs.
