Third Grade Class Participation
Thanks to the generosity of Race Sponsors, third-grade classrooms throughout the county will be offered a free decoy-sized duck to decorate and race in the annual Duck Race to End Racism. Teachers throughout the city and county have used the Duck Race to End Racism as a way to engage their students in important dialogues about fairness, justice, and non-violence. Third grade was selected because its curriculum includes a year-long unit on getting along, respecting differences, and building understanding across cultural lines.
Benefits:
- Your school has a chance to win a Diversity Resource Library, or a live performance if your duck wins the race.
- Your classroom will receive a realistic-sized plastic duck to decorate and free curriculum material about promoting racial justice and understanding.
- You will be able to get public exposure for your school by having a duck in the Duck Race.
- Your classroom and your school will be seen by the community as part of the overall effort to bring about racial justice.
- Your school club or PTO can sell small rubber duckies and keep half the money as a fundraiser.
Expectations:
- Pick up your duck and other materials from the CWD office anytime after March 25th.
- Decorate your duck and get it back to CWD by Friday, June 2, 2008.
- Help us promote the Duck Race, including inviting the families of the children in your classroom. CWD will provide invitations in the duck kits.
- Promote racial and ethnic tolerance and understanding in your classroom.
- Teacher, Parent and/or Administrator from the school and at least one child (if not all!) from the classroom to represent your duck and accept the prize if you win.
The duck will come boxed with classroom exercises, a set of curriculum material and reading lists that will promote understanding, tolerance, and acceptance across racial and ethnic lines. To sign up, use the Third Grade Classroom Registration Form.
